Nested In The Himalayas, Sikkim Gets Its First Airport At 4500 ft

If you have been thinking of travelling to Sikkim, you can fly to Sikkim as the state gets its first airport. Sikkim Airport will become operational in the first week of October.

Till now the nearest airport to Sikkim was Bagdogra, which was also 150 Km away. But, now travelling to Sikkim have been become a lot easier with the airport at Pakyong.

The country’s newest airport is nested in the Himalayas at the height of 4500 ft and with this country’s airport count completes a century.

The airport located in the small town of Pakyong in East Sikkim is about 30 km from Gangtok.

On Sept 23rd, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will fly Sikkim to inaugurate the greenfield airport.

The Northeast’s first — which has been conceived at a budget of Rs 605.59 crore is engineered to include techniques like soil reinforcement and slope stabilisation technique.

Earlier in March Indian Air Force’s Dornier 228, later SpiceJet conducted test run which led to security clearances for commercial operations.

The airport — located in the small town of Pakyong in East Sikkim — is about 30 km from Gangtok. SpiceJet will operate daily flights to and from Kolkata and Guwahati from October 8th.
