The Dowry tradition in India is old, which still continues in some parts of India. And there are families who openly demand it. But, a groom from Hirinchi village, Kolkata has set an example for everyone by not accepting any dowry.

Suryakanta Barik 30, an English teacher at a private school in Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas, had told his prospective in-laws well in advance that he would not accept any dowry. When Barik arrived for his wedding he was in for a pleasant surprise.

The grooms family decided to gift the bridegroom ₹1 lakh worth of books. Around 1,000 books were gifted as both Barik and Priyanka love to read.

Telegraph India reports,

“I had made it clear that I would not accept any dowry. When I arrived for the wedding, I was pleasantly surprised to find a huge pile of books as a gift,”

Bride, Priyanka, who is herself a book lover expressed how happy she is to marry a man who is against the concept of dowry. She said:

“My family knew that I don’t like the concept of marriages that involve giving or taking dowry. So I am very grateful to have a husband who understands that. My father also knew that I love to read. That’s why he gave us this gift,”

The bride, Priyanka also requested the wedding guest not to bring any gifts but can contribute by bringing in flowers or books. A relative who attended the wedding said: “It was a welcome gesture.” Another guest said: “People read fewer books these days thanks to the Internet. I hope this will encourage people to gift books,”
