A 68-year-old man in Assam who is identified as Shaukat Ali was forced to eat fork in public for allegedly selling beef. The incident took place on Sunday in Biswanath district. The Muslim man was beaten on the road, abused by the group of people. He is currently being treated at a government hospital.
Police have arrested at least five people after the video went viral which showed the old man on his knees pleading to let him go. The video also shows he was given something to eat which alleged as the fork.
“Are you Bangladeshi? Is your name in the NRC (National Register of Citizens)?” someone in the mob can be heard asking him.
Firstly, beef is legal for consumption with ‘fit-for-slaughter’ certificate in Assam, its not illegal. In places like Kokrajhar 10 different non-Muslim communities eat Beef. These goons don’t care about cows, they just need an excuse to unleash their hatred for the muslims. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/6lqDc64BCj

A 68 yr old man was beaten by goons who forced him to eat Pork in public while abusing his religious faith just because they “suspected” him of selling “beef”. We should hang our heads in shame. (2/2) pic.twitter.com/NjWhzgPXwP

According to district police, two separate FIR has been filed. One of them is by Shaukat Ali’s brother. The police have started an investigation and are on the lookout for the men seen in the video.

Strong and stern legal action should be taken against the culprits. The culprits should be nabbed at earliest.

Absolutely shameful. I used to travel regularly to Assam in 2000 – 2002 and have been through Biswanath Chairali many times – this must been the handiwork of goons from outside the area. The people there are very peace loving and not at all bigoted.

However, Biswanath district police chief Rakesh Roushan said:
“It was not a matter of communal tension. The miscreants misbehaved with not only with Muslim man but also another person of a different community”
