I have no idea how to tell this out but Parotta is not roti. Yes, according to the Indian Government Parotta is not roti.
And the other important point here is the Good and Service Tax (GST) which is imposed on both the bread. Roti fetches 5% GST while Parotta has labeled with 18% GST.
Here is the logic
“The authority held that whole-wheat Porotta and Malabar Porotta do not fall under the heading of “Khakhara, plain chapati or roti” taxed at the rate of 5%. Since they “need to be heated before consumption” unlike ready-to-eat rotis, 18% GST would be applicable.”
However, Twitter isn’t impressed and began to poke fun.
When my dietician said Poori and Parotha are rich food I thought she was talking about calories 🙄 pic.twitter.com/S9ldlfcFqX

Its POROTTA , not parotta.
Porotta is the king of Indian breads.
Parotta is an offspring between a lion and a rat. #HandsOffPorotta

You spell it as Parota, Parotha, Parontha, Paratha or Parantha? I grew calling it Parantha.
More the letters, higher the tax?

Roti: 5% GST.
Parota: 18% GST.
Hmm, that would place Naan and Kulcha at 28%.

With all the other challenges the country is facing, it makes you wonder if we should be worrying about an existential crisis for the ‘Parota.’ In any case, given Indian jugaad skills, I’m pretty sure there will be a new breed of ‘Parotis’ that will challenge any categorisation! https://t.co/IwHXKYpGHG

Wowww… So Chappatti and Rotis only 5% GST (essential item) while Kerala Porottas will carry 18% GST (luxury item).
What’s next? Appam and Pazhampori having 28% GST?#HandsOffPorotta
